Autograph letter signed from Giuseppe Marco Antonio Baretti, Putney Common, to Mr. Cadell [manuscript], 1781 July 5.

Reasons for not repaying a loan of 50 guineas for the time being. If there should be another exhibition in May some of his remaining Guides [through the Royal Academy] may be sold. He is staying at Mr. Gawler's to read Italian with his children.

Thomas Cadell (1742-1802) entered the London book trade in 1758 as an apprentice to Andrew Millar. He entered into partnership with Millar in 1765, and became the sole proprietor in 1767. He was perhaps the leading bookseller in London until his retirement in 1793. Giuseppe Marco Antonio Baretti (1719-1789) was a native of Turin, Italy. After beginning his literary career in Italy, he removed to London in 1751. There he served as an Italian language tutor, and soon became a member of Samuel Johnson's literary circle. After publishing A Dictionary of the English and Italian Languages (1760), he returned to Italy for five years, where he courted controversy with his literary periodical La Frusta Letteraria.
